Relix review of Paradise Lost

On a record that ironically bemoans money loss (“Poor House”) to natural wonders (“Blair Mountain”) to brain cells (“Angel Dust”) to immune systems (“Radiation Blues”) to a profitable career (“Gonna Make a Record”—and name-checking MTV, Rolling Stone and Relix )—the 6-year-old Americana act finds their muse. Once appearing as a curious all-star side project of jam and bluegrass brethren, Great American Taxi have hit their stride with a remarkable record that defines their purpose, rocks with passion and leaves a memorable artistic impression. Songs surface, punch the listener with boisterous vigor and then move forward to the next creative idea, while featuring guest collaborators Elizabeth Cook, Barry Sless and Tim O’Brien. What is most telling is how confident the quintet—led by Vince Herman and Chad Staehly, and produced by Todd Snider —appear to be. More than anything, the Taxi sounds positively inspired, shooting for that loose ‘60s Dylanesque sound mixed with a fair measure of Gram Parsons that many bands attempt but often fail to pull off. Paradise Lost turns a poignantly-title work and concept on its head, while discovering another kind of nirvana. And that ain’t exactly a bummer, man.

Taxi Fall Tour Dates, New Record!

We are pleased to announce the release of our new studio recording, Paradise Lost, recorded earlier this year in Nashville, TN and produced by Todd Snider. You can now pre-order it for only $10 and the first 100 people to do so will get signed copies! In addition to Todd, the record also features guest performances from Tim O’Brien, Elizabeth Cook and Barry Sless.

To support the release we will be hitting the road this fall to many of our favorite places as well as a few new ones. After a swing through the Midwest we’ll be at Yonder’s Harvest fest for a couple days in October and opening a few shows for moe. in Texas in November, followed by our annual pilgrimage to the west coast for harvest tour! We hope to see you all out there.

As fall gets closer we wanted to alert you to our next round of shows and say thanks for another great summer! There were too many stellar shows to mention them all but we went coast to coast and to Alaska, too. We also got to conspire with our Buddy Todd Snider at different spots around the country, which is always a blast.

After playing our hometown festival, NEDFEST, tomorrow, we’ll be heading to Copper Country Festival over Labor Day weekend and then on to the Midwest the following week. That run culminates at a brand new, great looking festival called Shoe Fest, which will take place at historic  Stonehouse  Park  in  Earlville,  IL over September 9, 10 and 11. We hope to see you all out at this one!

We also wanted to let you know that we are putting the finishing touches on a new Taxi record that will be released in September and was produced by none other than our buddy, the aforementioned Todd Snider.

The fun continues for Vince Herman and Great American Taxi with a newly added leg of tour dates that kicks Great American Taxi into high gear in the New Year. To date, many of the most innovative and acclaimed players currently on the jamband/newgrass circuit have joined Taxi’s Reckless Habits Tour, which largely features the band’s signature style of country-, rock- and bluegrass-influenced Americana musical styles.

Taxi’s second and latest album, Reckless Habits, garnered impressive nods in 2010, appearing on several Best of 2010 lists. Railroad Earth will headline a string of January shows with Great American Taxi — RRE’s Tim Carbone produced Taxi’s Reckless Habits. In February, Great American Taxi teams up with the Emmitt-Nershi Band at Whisky Jack’s in Big Sky, Montana, and Todd Snider at the Nugget in Nevada. Taxi also backs Snider on his recent release, The Storyteller Live, which includes a bonus DVD of Taxi and Todd performing at the TPAC in Nashville, Tenn.

Artists joining Taxi onstage in the past year include: contemporary troubadour Todd Snider, the exceptional mandolin virtuoso and versatile vocalist Drew Emmitt (Leftover Salmon and his own Drew Emmitt Band), Billy Nershi (The String Cheese Incident), and the David Nelson Band, with their exploratory improvisational jam sessions.

Reckless Habits appeared on several Best of 2010 lists; it peaked at #12 on the Americana radio charts in 2010 and finished in the Americana Music Association’s Top 100 Americana albums of the year, coming in at #54; it held the top spot on Colorado radio in April and May of 2010 and charted at #6 overall on Colorado radio for the year. The album was picked in a No Depression Top 10 of the year and continues to chart in the Top Ten for spins on Jambands.com radio.
